I am happy to let you know that the Red Door Magazine celebrates 10 years of existence, with its issue #20 now online. I am glad to be featured for the first time in the Red Door Magazine, and I am very grateful to Msneverstop (Elizabeth Torres) for the invitation–to show and talk a bit about my work in the magazine’s pages.
Red Door Magazine is an alternative publication, aiming to create a platform for artists and storytellers to make their voices heard without censorship. I really like this approach, because I believe that the art is the chance we have to freedom, and it should be the medium to facilitate free expression and manifestation without following imposed agendas or interests that limits our abilities to communicate and express our desires, frustrations, worries, concerns, inspirations or realisations regarding our world.
This issue explores the ever-shifting topic of “The Future“, and as the present, the future is different for all of us. For some, the present is better than the past, better than the future we can imagine. For others, the present reveals the darker side of our nature, being directly affected by the demons and their doings, hoping for the future to be the better part. Nonetheless, we are living interesting times, with individual villains and collective heroes, with evil clowns and brave little girls to show us the way. All that WE can do, is to listen. And open our eyes. And our minds. And try to do better. Be better. We have a chance everyday to pursue this, and there is progress every day, for a better future.
For my side of the magazine, I talk in general lines about my work, what motivates me, and why I choose to make portraits. It’s an attempt to “freeze time“, to record an image, for the future. Some would wonder why I don’t use the camera and just take photos of my subjects…if that’s my intention. Well, photography does that quite well, but drawing…Drawing is my meditation. Drawing is my way of exploring, of creating, of recording the presence of someone, or something. It brings me closer to the person I illustrate, it gives a portal to her existence here and now, and it creates a more intimate connection. And the camera it’s not able to do that. Soderling, Ronnie Hawkins, Niels Hav...and so much more! Included is a download of the book THE SKELLIG by Ly de Angeles and Melaine Knight aka The Neon Rebel.
And, the newest thing: THE RED TRANSMISSIONS - the podcast that aims to document the work, behind-the-scenes moments and creative process of the incredibly interesting characters in our network, be it in Copenhagen, New York, or around the world. Very cool stuff!
